Concentration, Samadhi, or Ding our Cool Women’s T-shirt!

“Concentration” or “Ding” in Chinese, or “Samadhi” in Sanskrit is the subject of our New Qigong Shirt. Concentration is vital to Qigong, Tai Chi Chuan, Meditation, and martial arts like Northern Shaolin and Xing Yi Quan! Learning to avoid distractions and truly focus your mind on a single subject is a critically important skill.  Developing your ability to focus and concentrate your mind is a key indication of your skill in meditation, martial arts and Qigong.

In Buddhist meditation, practitioners learn to focus their mind on a single object.  This is called the subject of meditation.  Usually this is not a physical object, like a painting or a statue.  Rather, it is often an idea or concept.  The Visuddhimagga, “the Path of Purification” is a famous text on meditation. In the Visuddhimagga there are 40 different subjects of meditation listed.

One of the best meditation subjects is your breath.  Concentrating on your breathing is one of the few meditation subjects that can lead you to the most advanced states of single minded concentration, called Ding, or Samadhi.  This shows the deep connection between Qigong, martial arts like Northern Shaolin, Tai Chi Chuan, or Xing Yi Quan, and meditation.  By focusing on, and developing a deep connection between our mind, and our breath, we can enter into a deep state of concentration.

When discussing meditation being able to say someone can “Ding” or enter “Samadhi” means they have reached an advanced level on concentration that few people can achieve. When experiencing “Ding” or “Samadhi” your mind is fully focused without distraction on a single subject.  At this point of concentration, profound, possibly life changing, insights often occur.

We seriously doubt this shirt will help you enter these advanced states of concentration. But it will certainly show your aspiration to deepen your insight and meditation, Qigong or martial arts skill.  It is a cool looking shirt with beautiful calligraphy by Rachel Jensen.

Rachel learned traditional brush calligraphy growing up in Tainan in southern Taiwan.  Tainan is the former capital of old Taiwan and the religious and cultural center of the country.  It is filled with ancient temples, artisans, masters of tea ceremony, calligraphy and other traditional arts such as sculpture, painting and pottery.  Considering mainland China deliberately and systematically destroyed their traditional culture during the cultural revolution, Tainan is a real gem, if you love the best parts of the old Chinese culture.

There are many styles of brush calligraphy. This is written in the style known as Kai Shu, standard script, one of the most easily read classic styles.  Although the name standard sounds mundane to our ears, this style is precise, beautiful, and honestly, rather difficult to accomplish, because you must meet a specific standard, rather than being wildly expressive.

The American Apparel t-shirt is the smoothest and softest t-shirt you’ll ever wear. Made of fine jersey, it has a durable, vintage feel. These classic-cut shirts are known for their premium quality, as well as ability to stand up to a washing machine (will maintain size and color after many washes). The shirts are 100% fine jersey cotton,. This women’s t-shirt is made form-fitting to flatter a woman’s curves.
