Feng Yuan Meets King Hui

Lord Meng was grateful and sent Feng with carriages and lots of gold for a long trip. Feng then headed towards to the State of Wei and met with King Hui.

He told King Hui:

“Lord Meng is a rare find. Lord Meng is a very talented Lord and strategist.

Whoever can use his talents and wisdom will surely enrich their country and strengthen their army. Now, the King of Qi foolishly took the wrong advice, and wants to exile him. I’m wondering; who is lucky enough to hire him next?”

King Hui needed a strategist like Lord Meng, because his best strategist was now the general leading the army. King Hui wanted to hire Lord Meng to be his strategist.

In the mean time, Feng Yuan rushed back to Fort Xue and told Lord Meng: “Do not accept King Hui’s offer!”

The news of King Hui of Wei offering Lord Meng lots of treasure to be his top strategist got back to King Ming of Qi. King Ming of Qi was worried that the King of Wei would attack him. He also thought “Lord Meng must be a much better strategist than I thought! Why else would the King of Wei offer him so much treasure? Did I make a mistake firing Lord Meng?”

An Invitation from the King

Soon King Ming sent an invitation to Lord Meng to come visit him in the palace.

Before Lord Meng left, Feng told him:

”King Ming wants you to return as his Strategist. Be prepared to negotiate. Tell King Ming you want to show respect to the royal ancestors at Fort Xue. Suggest to the King that he build a temple for the ancestors of Qi there and then move the ancestors’ treasures to Fort Xue.”

The ancient Chinese Kings had many important rituals, dances and plays that used large, beautiful, and expensive bronze art, treasures, and instruments to show respect to their ancestors, the ancient Kings and Queens. Feng knew the King would want to protect these treasures, and Fort Xue where the Ancestors’ Temple would be built.

The King Smiles at Lord Meng

King Ming hired Lord Meng back and gave him a big raise! King Ming made Lord Meng powerful and important again. Now, Lord Meng was much safer because he had the best job, strategist for the King, and he was able to give the King good advice. This is the second hole Feng helped Lord Meng create with a clever strategy.

The King of Qi also agreed to move the ancestors’ treasures to Fort Xue and build the temple to the ancestors. After the Ancestors’ Temple was built, and the treasures were moved in, the King of Qi sent a large army to help protect Fort Xue. Then, Fort Xue was so strong that other armies dared not to attack. This made Lord Meng’s house, and family safe and well protected.

Feng then said to Lord Meng:

“All three holes have been built. Your people love you, you are the top strategist to the King, and you have a powerful army protecting your own Fort Xue. You are now safe.”

Lord Meng listened to Feng’s needs and provided support for him. Lord Meng treated Feng with care and politeness. In return, he earned Feng’s trust and support. Feng repaid Lord Meng’s kindness with clever strategies that created 3 rabbit holes, or safety nets, for him.
