Tui Na Massage- What to Expect During Class and Between Sessions
Tui Na massage is a new concept for many people. Let’s explore what happens when you practice Tui Na in class and between sessions.
Tui Na is a fully-clothed massage, with both the practitioner and patient remaining fully dressed. This is different from many Western massage styles, where the patient may be partially or fully undressed and covered with towels or sheets. The clothing in Tui Na helps those who feel uncomfortable with disrobing or being touched by others to still receive the benefits of manual therapy.
During class, the session will flow through three main activities:
- Demonstrations – Sifu Jensen will demonstrate Tui Na techniques on one or more participants, explaining the lessons as he goes.
- Partner Practice – Students will then practice the demonstrated techniques on each other, either on massage tables, mats on the floor, or while seated in chairs. Sifu Jensen will closely supervise, providing coaching and additional hands-on demos to ensure everyone can properly feel the sensations of each technique.
- Theory Lectures – After the practice session, you’ll take a break and then listen to lectures from Sifu Jensen on the philosophy and traditional medicine principles behind Tui Na.
This cycle of demo, practice, and theory will typically happen 3 times per seminar.
Between seminars, you’ll be required to practice Tui Na on family and friends. Keeping treatment notes is a great way to track your progress. Investing in your own massage table or thick floor mat can make these home practice sessions more comfortable and effective. The more you practice, the faster your skills will develop – without regular practice, the lessons will be quickly forgotten.
Even inexperienced Tui Na can feel wonderful, so finding willing practice partners shouldn’t be too difficult, especially if you have a spouse or partner who can assist you.
If you attend the classes regularly and practice diligently between sessions, you’ll gain invaluable knowledge and skills. With time and practice, these healing techniques will blossom, allowing you to share the benefits of Tui Na with your family and friends, improving their health and wellbeing. Your own happiness and good karma will grow as you help others find relief and vitality.
