Astragalus, Goji & Jujube Tea for Vitality: Benefits, Uses, and When to Avoid It

Taiwanese food culture has long included gentle herbal support as part of everyday life. Rather than using herbs only when something is wrong, many people use simple formulas to maintain balance over time.

I grew up around this. My mother often used herbs at home, and I continued learning through visits with Chinese medicine doctors.

Today I’d like to share a simple and popular combination:

Astragalus (黃芪), Goji Berries (枸杞), and Jujube (紅棗).

This trio is commonly used as a light tea or soup to support energy, immunity, and overall vitality.

Why These Three Herbs

  • Astragalus (黃芪)
Supports Qi and the lungs, helping build energy and strengthen the body’s outer defense.
  • Goji Berries (枸杞)
Nourish the liver and blood, supporting vision, flexibility, and long-term vitality.
  • Jujube (紅棗)
Supports the heart and digestion, calms the system, and nourishes the skin.

Together, they create a balanced, gentle formula for daily use.

Simple Preparation

  • 3–5 slices Astragalus
  • 8–12 Goji berries
  • 2–3 Jujube (use a knife to cut the skin open before cooking)
  • 3–4 cups water

Instructions:

  1. Bring to a boil
  2. Lower heat and simmer for 20–30 minutes
  3. Sip throughout the day, preferably in the morning or afternoon (avoid drinking late at night).

You can cook the herbs twice before discarding.

When to Avoid and Use with Awareness

Even gentle tonic herbs are not always appropriate.

Do not use this tea if you:

  • Feel like you’re getting sick (cold, flu, fever)
  • Have an active infection
  • Just had surgery or are in early recovery

Tonic herbs build and move Qi—during acute illness, the body often needs to clear, not build.

Use with awareness if you:

  • Have specific medical conditions
  • Have blood sugar concerns
  • Are unsure if tonic herbs are appropriate for you

Sometimes the most powerful practices are the simplest.

A small daily habit—like a pot of herbal tea—can gently support your energy, resilience, and long-term health.
