Dear Family and Friends,
We are confronted by the COVID-19, and it’s scary. Taiwan is only 81 miles from the coast of China has done an amazing job getting the COVID-19 under control. I am sure everyone has read a whole bunch of COVID-19 documents and articles. So, I am going to share my personal immune boost regimes with you all. Fortifying your immune system will increase your chance of successfully going through this period safely. The more proactive we are about protecting ourselves, the safer everyone will be.
During this critical time, the most important things are:
- Being mindful of what you are doing.
- Hygiene.
- Personal care.
We all learned that maintaining social distance is key! Do not touch or hug anyone. Keep 6+ feet in distance from people.
This is what I do when I have to go to a store.
- Wear a mask.
- Wear disposable gloves.
- Have your hand sanitizer spray handy. If you don’t have hand sanitizers, use alcohol.
- After you are done with your shopping or whatever you need to do in public, carefully peel your gloves off and chuck them immediately.
- Sanitize the surface of your belongs and the stuff from the store, and sanitize your hands before entering your car.
A few years ago, I was caring for Sifu’s pneumonia. The following recommendations was what I did to NOT get sick while Sifu was recovering.
Other mindfulness practices that Rachel recommends:
- Wash your hands OFTEN with soap. Do not touch your eyes, mouth, nose or any open cuts you may have.
- Rinse your mouth with mouth wash or strong salt water.
- And / Or do oil pulling. This is an ancient personal care method. When I feel my system is weak, this is what I do to prevent myself from getting sick. It will keep your mouth environment freer of germs and bacteria and add another layer of prevention. There’s an old saying in Mandarin, “illnesses enter via the mouth”.
- Keep your nose passage clean, do nasal irrigation. If you have gunk in your nose passage, this is a great way to flush mucus out of your nose immediately. The more gunk you have in your body, the less effective your immune is. All you need is a squeezable bottle with an opening that’s narrow enough to fit into your nostril. If you have not done it, this may seem a bit “scary” to pour water into your nose. It just takes a bit practice, and if you have stuffy nose, this would clear it right away! I recommend adding a bit of salt in the tap water, otherwise, the hard water may feel quite intense.
- Have Olive Leaf Extract capsules handy. Sifu and I have been using Olive Leaf Extract to prevent us from getting a cold or flu. Olive Leaf Extract seems to help build immune defenses and prevent sickness. We have tried a variety of supplements. If you feel the first sign of getting sick, take 500mg, sometimes, I take 1000mg immediately. We know that if a person gets COVID-19, the symptoms dose not occur until it’s too late. Olive Leaf Extract is to prevent yourself from being in a vulnerable condition so that allows COVID-19 to get you.
- Have Gaia brand Bronchial Wellness Syrup handy. This syrup works great when we need lung repairs. This also helped Sifu with his pneumonia recovery years ago. Few things helped, but this one did work right away. Thanks to Jackie Thompson for bringing a bottle of this to Sifu years ago. Now we keep this in our medicine cabinet.
- Regular exercise. Keep up with your practice so that your body gets enough oxygen and is strong and healthy enough to endure this stressful time.
- Eat well, so that your body has resources to withstand COVID-19 blows.
- Drink lots of water!!!
- Eat lots of garlic, onions, and ginger.
- Rest: rest your body, rest your mind and remember to breathe! Both exercise and meditation are great for this. Stress and a tired body increase your chance of getting sick.
- Get in the sun. Breathe fresh air.
- Be sure to feed your spirit, and keep your spirit happy.
- Send prayers. Pray for everyone’s safety. Ask for protection.
Other Precautions:
- If you have someone come into your house, clean and sanitize your house and surfaces. Assume that everyone is a carrier.
- If you receive a package, assume that the surface is contaminated, sanitize the surface before bringing it into your house.

Hi Rachel. Thanks for the information. I am not sure about the mask – I think it may give people a false sense of security. The CDC recommends use of a N95 respirator which must be fitted and can be relatively uncomfortable (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/respirator-use-faq.html). The use of surgical masks – per this article – https://www.livescience.com/face-mask-new-coronavirus.html – ‘They’re not designed to keep out viral particles, and they’re not nearly as tightly fitted around your nose and cheeks” as an N95 respirator,’ (however, if you have the virus it is recommended!) Additionally these masks in the context of disease transmission are meant to be single use masks, meaning you will need a lot of them around – and there is a shortage of them for health care workers. Additionally, you have to be very careful when you remove the mask if you are super concerned about infection as you would figure. (I looked around – there are reusable masks).
See you soon – Bill
Thank you for sharing the info. Wearing a mask in public is a great extra layer of protection!
Awesome post. Thanks!
Rachel – writing to you from Petaluma to thank you for the above tips. I have the bronchial wellness syrup but didn’t know about olive leaf extract.
Be well.
