“In Between – The Dash”- Rachel’s Reflections + Listen to The Hu!

I used to travel in between countries a lot. Because I could not understand my own culture and I was not able to make peace with it. So, I sought my answers outward, I went to see other cultures. Taiwan – Thailand – Indonesia – Taiwan – America – back to Taiwan – England and on and on. My friends in Taiwan were so used to seeing me “in between”, the one question they often asked me was, how long are you staying this time?

When I was in college, I lost an elderly friend. One of my professors said something like this to me – “When you look at a tomb stone, 1928 – 2005, people pay attention to the date of birth and the date of death. But what really matters is the dash, the seems so insignificant short line in between.” My professor put life in a new light for me. It’s the dash that tells about a person. How did they live? What have they accomplished? What impact have they made for the people in their life, for our society, for the world? For our Grandmaster Wong Jackman 1941 – 2018, the dash that Grandmaster Wong made was huge! He shone light on the meaning of Martial Virtue. He transmitted the knowledge and wisdom of various classical Chinese Martial Arts, in particular, Northern Shaolin, that we still get to practice and love till this day. It blows my mind to think that we are practicing the same arts that people did hundreds of years ago, and their wisdom still holds true. These arts traveled through time, and when we practice, we traveled back in time. What a connection!

When I was traveling between countries, it’s not the destinations that gave me answers. It’s the dash, leaving my own country, learning from the people of another country, and then heading back to Taiwan, that’s teaching me how to see my own culture, teaching me to grow.

If you are reading this, I congratulate you. You are making your dash. How are you making your dash? What intentions? What actions?

This beautiful music video I am about to share with you is about “the dash”, the action you choose to take, and how you choose to live. It is about cherishing the ancestor’s wisdom. Because no matter how we choose to make our dash, we can never forget our root. For what we are today, and what we enjoy today, came from the people before us, our ancestors – our root. Without them, there wouldn’t have been us.

The music is by a Mongolian Rock band, The Hu, that I recently got turned on by my wonderful step-son, Connor. The song is called Yuve Yuve Yu – How Strange! This is a wake up call to the younger Mongolian generations. There are translations of the lyrics in the video.

This music will get your head moving and feet tapping! Be warned! Mongolian does sound like Klingon 😊I hope you enjoy it!

p.s. The picture above is me traveling in a desert near the blue city – Jodhpur, India. The village kids were curious and proud to have their pictures taken!
