Our recent event to the underground Gold Mountain Tournament offered a glimpse into the living culture of traditional Chinese martial arts, as experienced firsthand by two of our dedicated students.
Darren, who stepped up to compete despite having an injury, shared:
“Going to the Gold Mountain Tournament gave me a real feeling for the culture and spirit of Chinese Martial arts. It felt special because there were only kung fu practitioners and it was in Chinatown. In addition, competing with my forms was good for strengthening the courage needed to do something that I was afraid to do, and also helped me to see where I can improve my practice. Meeting other martial arts students and watching them perform was fun. And seeing all of the martial arts teachers embodying the culture and spirit of kung fu was inspiring.”
Aya, attending as a first-time spectator and supporter, reflected:
“The gym was small but bursting with enthusiasm and packed with people. I was very glad to be emotional support to Darren, who represented our team! It was fun to see Sifu Jensen outside the classroom, mingling with other Sifu and Kung fu elders. I was able to chat with Sifu Rick Wing, Yuri who is practicing Eagle Craw, and Aaron Peskin who was supervisor. I felt like I am in greater community where we honor the tradition and hard work is appreciated.”
Together, Darren and Aya’s words capture the essence of why we show up for these events—not only to test ourselves, but to witness, support, and celebrate the living spirit of Kung Fu as a community.
